Republic of Congo

The Republic of Congo is one of many countries within the Congo Basin with extensive tropical forest cover. Climatic change is projected to heavily impact Congo's agriculture and ecosystems, with negative consequences for its people, especially poor and marginalized groups who are particularly vulnerable to climate-related shocks. In central and northern Congo, climate change threatens communities with rising temperatures, increased days of extreme heat, and extreme weather events such as more frequent and severe droughts and more intense rainfall. This may translate into lower water availability, more variable and shorter growing seasons, and reductions in production potential.

A PROGREEN investment program supports the Climate-Resilient and Inclusive Livelihoods Project in Congo, which aims to address agriculture challenges and reduce climate vulnerability through natural capital management. Activities will include multiple technical reports on landscape governance arrangements, climate-smart agriculture practices, and the economic cost of deforestation to inform structural and policy changes.

PROGREEN financing has supported the completion of a Project Implementation Manual (PIM), which lays out the rules and procedures for the project's day-to-day operations. Additionally, the program provided technical support in the leadup and during the Summit of the Three Basins hosted by the Republic of Congo. Preparation is underway for three technical studies, including a landscape management study, a sustainable and resilient agriculture study, and an economic costs of degradation study.
